The CSUMB Data Glossary provides meaning and context for campus data. It helps Cal State Monterey Bay data users understand shared terms, interpret reports and dashboards, and make informed decisions.

What you’ll find

Glossary entries bring together definitions and supporting information. Depending on the term, an entry may include:

  • A definition and relevant business rules.
  • Example values or scenarios that show how the term is used.
  • Source documentation and related resources.
  • Reports and dashboards where the term appears.
  • Metadata such as the campus data owner or custodian, source system, table and field names, and calculations or transformations.

The amount of detail varies by entry. Definitions and supporting information are reviewed and updated as campus processes change.

A shared campus resource

The glossary is maintained through collaboration between Institutional Assessment & Research (IAR) and campus departments and individuals with expertise in the data. Data owners and custodians help review definitions and document the business processes behind them.

Thank you to our campus colleagues who contribute their knowledge and help keep this resource useful for campus-wide, data-informed decision-making.

Continuing to improve

The refreshed design is the first phase of broader efforts to improve navigation and discoverability across our data tools. It offers a more responsive experience and a look and feel that aligns with Cal State Monterey Bay branding. The glossary’s core purpose and functionality remain the same.

Work to enhance metadata and category tagging is in its early stages. These improvements will help connect definitions, related topics, and the reports and dashboards that use them.
