Citing CSUMB Dashboards and Glossary Entries
More actions
This guide explains how to cite Campus Data Warehouse dashboards and CSUMB Data Glossary entries. Follow the citation style required by your discipline or publication. The examples below adapt web-source conventions to these campus resources.
Tips for citation
- Use the exact dashboard or glossary entry title and a link to that resource.
- Record the date you accessed the resource.
- Use a publication or revision date only when it applies to the content you are citing.
- Dashboard links may require campus authentication. Use the dashboard's sharing link and describe the data selections separately; do not assume a link preserves every filter.
- For a glossary definition, cite the individual entry rather than the glossary home page. Use the entry's Permanent link when citing a particular revision. A permanent link preserves the version of the definition you consulted.
Get a sharing link to a Campus Data Warehouse dashboard
- Open the dashboard and the sheet you want to cite.
- Select the reporting period, filters, and other controls relevant to the data you used.
- Select Share this view in the upper-right dashboard toolbar, as shown in the screenshot.
- Use the sharing dialog to copy the link for your citation.
- Record the access date, reporting period, and selected filters separately. Readers still need the appropriate dashboard access.
Get a permanent link to a glossary entry
- Open the glossary entry you want to cite.
- Open More actions (the three-dot menu in the page actions toolbar).
- Under Tools, select Permanent link.
- Copy the address from your browser. The link includes an oldid revision number and points to the version you consulted.
General citation for campus reports and presentations
When a formal citation style is not required, use the following format.
Campus Data Warehouse dashboard
California State University, Monterey Bay, Campus Data Warehouse. [Dashboard title]. [URL]. Accessed [Month Day, Year]. Reporting period: [period]. Filters: [selected filters].
CSUMB Data Glossary entry
California State University, Monterey Bay, CSUMB Data Glossary. "[Entry title]." [Entry URL or permanent link]. Accessed [Month Day, Year].

Reference list
For a dashboard without a publication or revision date, use n.d. and include a retrieval date. Replace n.d. with the applicable date when available. For a glossary entry, use the revision date and permanent link to the version you consulted. A retrieval date is generally unnecessary for that fixed revision. Use sentence case for titles.
Dashboard
California State University, Monterey Bay, Campus Data Warehouse. (n.d.). [Dashboard title]. Retrieved [Month Day, Year], from [URL]
Glossary entry
California State University, Monterey Bay, CSUMB Data Glossary. ([Year], [Month Day]). [Entry title]. In CSUMB data glossary. [Permanent link]
In-text citations
- Dashboard: (California State University, Monterey Bay, Campus Data Warehouse, n.d.)

Works Cited
Use quotation marks for the dashboard or entry title and italics for the containing website. Include the publication or revision date before the URL when available. An access date is useful for changing resources.

Glossary entry

In-text citations
For these unpaginated resources, identify the author in your prose or parenthetical citation. When citing multiple resources by the same author, add a shortened title to distinguish them. Do not invent page numbers.

Describe the data or definition used
Dashboard data
Record the reporting period, filters, and other selections that affect the values you used. For a specific chart or table, also identify its title and dashboard sheet. Put these details in the surrounding text, a methods section, or a table or figure note when using a formal citation style.
Example data note (illustrative selections):
Data represent Fall 2025 undergraduate students in the College of Science. Filters selected: Student Level = Undergraduate; College = College of Science.
List the actual selections, including defaults. Write "No filters applied" only when that accurately describes the view. The reporting period describes the data and is separate from the date the dashboard was published or accessed.
Glossary definitions
Identify the term and, when relevant, the section used (for example, Definition or Business Rules). If you quote wording, use quotation marks and cite the entry. If the entry attributes a definition or rule to another source, consult and cite that original source when your work relies on it.
Example context note:
The definition of [term] follows the [Definition / Business Rules] section of the CSUMB Data Glossary entry "[Entry title]," using the revision dated [Month Day, Year].
