Gender (Sex Code) and Gender Identity are collected directly from students and captured in the Enrollment Reporting System (ERS). As federal IPEDS reporting only allows binary gender (Women/Men), the logic below is used to generate IPEDS compliant values. This approach aims to maximize the use of student-reported binary gender data while also being easily replicable using fields from the ERS record. Sex Code is used for IPEDS when a student indicates Female or Male. If Sex Code is Non-binary, a binary value is derived either from Gender Identity (if equal to Man, Woman, Trans Man, or Trans Woman) or the last digit of the student identifier (for all other records) for federal reporting purposes.
