Learning Mode
Learning Mode identifies the instructor / enrolled students environment as either live instructor with physically present students ("Face-to-Face" mode) or prescheduled (days/hours) remote broadcast of instruction ("Synchronous" mode) or web delivered instruction available to students 24/7 ("Asynchronous" mode). Hybrid learning modes combine some aspects of "Face-to-Face", "Synchronous", or "Asynchronous" modes.
In addition to the APDB Learning Modes, CSU Monterey Bay has two additional groupings based on how the learning modalities for courses are often discussed and reported on our campus: Course Modality Group and Flexible Course Option Group.

---|---|---|---|---|
01 | Asynchronous no meetings AB386 | Asynchronous 24/7 web delivered instruction with no intermittent face to face meetings with students thru out the term | Purely Online | Distance |
02 | Synchronous no meetings AB386 | Synchronous web or airwaves delivered instruction at pre-scheduled (weekly or biweekly) days/times
with no face to face meetings with students thru out the term |
Purely Online | Distance |
03 | Asynchronous mtgs allowed FDE | Asynchronous instructional delivery course section which includes very limited specific date face to face or
synchronous meetings for orientation and/or mid-term and/or final exam and/or rare single date class meetings for other purposes. |
Face-to-face + Online Hybrid | Distance |
04 | Synchronous mtgs allowed FDE | Synchronous web or airwaves delivered instruction at pre-scheduled (weekly or biweekly) days/times with
INTERMITTENT (days/times vary and less frequent then biweekly) face to face meetings for one or more of following: orientation, mid-term and/or final exams, and overview of next phase of course content. |
Face-to-face + Online Hybrid | Distance |
05 | Asynchronous with mtgs, Hybrid | Hybrid combination of face to face and asynchronous 24/7 web delivered instruction. Face to face component must
meet weekly or biweekly at specific day/times. |
Face-to-face + Online Hybrid | Non-Distance |
06 | Synchronous with mtgs, Hybrid | Hybrid combination of face to face and synchronous instruction (see 02 definition above). Both the face to face
and synchronous (pre-scheduled broadcast) component must meet weekly or biweekly at specific day/times. |
Face-to-face + Online Hybrid | Non-Distance |
09 | Face-to-face | 100% face to face (live instructor + physically assembled students) instruction thru out the term | Purely Face-to-Face | Non-Distance |
10 | A/S Hybrid no meetings AB386 | Hybrid combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction (see 01 and 02 definitions above) with no intermittent face to face meetings with students thru out the term | Purely Online | Distance |
11 | A/S Hybrid mtgs allowed FDE | Hybrid combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction (see 03 and 04 definitions above) with INTERMITTENT (days/times vary and less frequent then biweekly) face to face meetings for one or more of following: orientation, mid-term and/or final exams, and overview of next phase of course content. | Face-to-face + Online Hybrid | Distance |
NOTE: Effective CY 2021-22 some CSU campuses will be reporting individual course offerings which contain 3 distinct instructional modes (face to face, synchronous and asynchronous). Such offerings will be reported via a combination of existing learning modes 01 thru 04, 06 and 09. A total of 3 separate categories for such courses has been identified and are documented (see page 15 in the APDB Learning Mode Examples Documentation).[1]
Business Rule
Facility ID and Space ID are defaulted to blank in the APDB Section file when Learning Mode is "03" (Asynchronous).
Examples
Example values for Learning Mode include:
- Asynchronous
- Asynchronous mtgs allowed FDE
- Asynchronous no meetings AB386
- Asynchronous with mtgs, Hybrid
- Face-to-face
See the APDB Data Element Dictionary for all codes and corresponding descriptions.[2]

Definition Source
"A two character code that, for a given course offering, identifies the instructor/enrolled students environment as either live instructor with physically present students (“Face-to-Face” mode) or prescheduled (days/hours) remote broadcast of instruction (”Synchronous” mode) or web delivered instruction available to students 24/7 (“Asynchronous” mode). Campus reported Learning Mode and Space Type codes allow for a quantitative assessment of the extent to which the use of available remote instructional technology reduces the need for traditional lecture and laboratory SFDB space."[2]
