Position Academic Rank Description

Position Academic Rank Description refers to the faculty classification plan where the traditional levels in the faculty hierarchy are defined as Assistant, Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor. A faculty member who has been hired as an Assistant Professor will be referred to as holding the rank of Assistant Professor. Movement from one rank to the next higher rank generally originates with recommendation/approval from the campus president.[1]

The IPEDS HR survey includes the ranks of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Instructor, and Lecturer.[2]

Business Rules

In CMS, Academic Rank is located in Position Management.  

Academic Rank = 002 Lec. A, 003 Lec.B/Asst, 004 Lec. C/Assoc, 005 Lec. D/Prof.

Positions with multiple headcounts are assigned 002 or 003. In Job Data, the employee’s Grade is entered, which may not match Academic Rank:

Lec A. = Grade 2

Lec. B/Asst Prof = Grade 3

Lec. C/Assoc Prof = Grade 4

Lec. D/Prof = Grade 5
