A Major is a student's field of study or specialization. This may have been selected as an interest on the admissions application or through a formal declaration process later in their academic career.
Learning outcomes for the Major include:
- an understanding of the breadth of the body of knowledge in a discipline, or of several disciplines in interdisciplinary programs,
- competence in the fundamental skills and methodologies of the discipline(s), and
- understanding and skill at an appropriate depth in various aspects of the body of knowledge.
Items (1) and (2) may be thought of as the "core" of the major.
Examples
Admissions and enrollment reporting designates each student under a single major, but degrees reporting lists students under all of their majors.
Many dashboards in the CSUMB Data Warehouse utilize Major Long Description, which provides the long description of a student's Major, although some use Major Description, which is the abbreviation associated with a particular Major.
